Evgeny Antufiev was born and grew up in the Siberian republic of Tuva, a remote region which maintains active practices of alchemy, oral folklore and shamanism to this day. The artist's interest in archaeological and local history research formed the basis of many of his projects. Using an anthropological approach, Antufiev created his own mythology, based on elements of traditional crafts, mythological characters of the peoples of the world, reinterpreted by the artist. In his works, Antufiev explores the impact on human culture of various materials such as stone, bone, wood, amber and bronze. The worlds created by Antufiev are at the intersection of nature and culture, legend and facts, real and fictional, and the subtle handling of kitsch aesthetics adds a charge of irony to the artist's works.
